Geomembrane liners is also called impervious membrane. With geotechnical cloth as the conduct water layer, high polymer plastic film as the impervious layer, after rolling, hot melting and coating into composite geotechnical anti seepage material. Its thickness is 0.2 mm - 3 mm, in which the thickness of 0.8 mm above is also called geomembrane. The impervious performance of the geotechnical membrane is mainly depend on the impervious performance of the plastic film. Geomembrane liners' rolling, hot melting and coating production process not only maintain its good mechanical properties, but also make the thickness of the composite product film uniform.
On installation of the geomembrane, wrinkling should be carefully avoided as this has been indicated as one of the reasons for failure (Rollin et al., 1994). Seaming should be carried out by welding of the geomembrane sheet along the direction of the leachate flux. Furthermore, seaming should be parallel to the line of the maximum slope along the side (CTD, 1997). After emplacement, the lining should be controlled according to a well-defined Quality Control Procedure (Cossu and Muntoni, 1994).
Following installation and control, geomembranes should be mechanically protected from the adjacent drainage materials (gravel, stones, etc.). To this purpose, sandy soil with a thickness of 20–30 cm may be used. As an alternative, geotextiles or geocomposites are commonly interposed between the granular and synthetic materials (Kirshner and Witte, 1994). Geotextile cushioning performance is largely dependent on operative conditions (subgrade, pressure, shape of drainage materials, etc.) as well as mass, thickness, and typology of geotextile (material, manufacturing technique, etc.). Performance tests should be employed to assess the suitability of a geotextile to provide adequate protection (Hornsey and Wishaw, 2012; Austin et al., 2014).
